Our History

Lee-Moore Oil Company was founded by W.E. Nichols and Truby G. Proctor, Sr. in 1932, incorporated in 1937 in Sanford, North Carolina.  The Business Model at the time was to service homes with heating oil and provide farmers in the area with fuel oil for curing tobacco.

  • In the 1960’s and 70’s, the company began providing motor fuel to the convenience store industry.  The company had two particular milestones during this period: (1) the company was one of the first in the nation to offer motor fuel on a “self-service” basis without a fuel attendant, and (2) one of the first to build and operate a fully unattended retail fuel site utilizing pre-payment bill acceptor technology.

  • 1967 The company helped to assemble 1,515 acres to create the Carolina Trace development, along with W.J. Brinn, Jr. and Bill Arnold.

  • In 1967 Truby G. Proctor, Jr. and Sam Wornom started The Pantry, Inc. chain of convenience stores.  Lee-Moore Oil Company and The Pantry, Inc. experienced significant growth and expanded into new markets while other distributors struggled during the fuel crisis of the 70’s.

  • In the 1980’s the company recognized the importance and imminence of tighter fuel management and environmental regulations.  Lee-Moore Oil Company took a leadership role in being one of the first to use fiberglass tank and piping technology.

  • In 1987 the company sold 60% of its retail fuel sites in exchange for ownership in The Pantry, Inc. and the company began a more aggressive strategy of investing in real estate for convenience retail and commercial/residential development use.

  • 1988 The company develops Governors Club, an award winning 1,600 acre private golf community located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

  • 1990 The company develops a commercial fleet fueling business utilizing the “GasCard” franchise.
